Barry Katz is one of Connecticut’s leading proponents of sustainability. With more than twenty years experience in new home construction and remodeling, Barry Katz Homebuilding now offers complete green building, renovation, and consulting services. Barry is the recipient of the 2007 HOBI Award for Best Green House from the Connecticut Association of Homebuilders.
Over the last decade an extensive education in sustainable design and construction has taken Barry to conferences and classes around the country, including building science workshops with EEBA (Energy & Environmental Building Association), the NAHB course, Green Building for Building Professionals, the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for New Construction and LEED for Homes workshops – as well as extensive reading and first hand research. Katz is a LEED® Accredited Professional.
Recent speaking engagements have taken him to San Diego for “Reinvention 2006,” sponsored by Residential Architect magazine, and to the Boston Society of Architects’ 2007 Residential Design Conference where he participated in the panel discussion, “Spec Houses for the 21st Century,” and presented a for-credit workshop, “Green Building: Rocket Science or Common Sense?” He returns as a presenter for the 2008 BSA conference.
Barry Katz holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art. After a ten year career as an advertising art director he decided to pursue a lifelong interest in architecture, which led to the founding of his own home building business in 1985. Today Barry Katz Homebuilding, Inc. designs and constructs finely crafted, environmentally friendly homes inspired by classical and traditional architecture. He has participated in architectural classes and seminars at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design and at New York’s Institute for Classical Architecture, where he is a Professional Member. He is also a member of the Congress for the New Urbanism, CORA (the Congress of Residential Architecture), and the U.S. Green Building Council.
Barry Katz is a former chairman of the Westport Architectural Review Board. His published writings have included columns on home improvement for Fairpress and the Westport Minuteman newspapers, and articles about architecture and the arts for Weston Magazine and other publications. He is currently at work on a book, “Practical Green Remodeling: Sustainable Solutions for Every Day Homes,” due out from Taunton Press in 2009.
