This
unique home was designed to combine the best of old-world detailing
and craftsmanship with advanced twenty-first century technology.
The interior
is detailed in the manner of the finest pre-war New York apartments,
with classically scaled spaces and features such as plaster cornices,
inlaid floors, extensive wall paneling, hand-finished custom cabinetry,
and a palate of finishes and materials chosen for their understated
richness and elegance.
The design
was inspired by sources including Palladio’s “Four
Books of Architecture,” and Edith Wharton’s authoritative
book, “The Decoration of Houses.” Many of the details
derive from research at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s
period rooms, as well as numerous books on the architecture of
McKim, Meade, and White, plus invaluable seminars and publications
from New York’s Institute for Classical Architecture. Some
of the custom-mixed paint colors were chosen with the assistance
of the office of the Curator of the White House. Others were inspired
by historic houses such as Mount Vernon and Monticello.
Technologically,
the house is superior in all respects, with state-of-the-art mechanical
systems designed for maximum comfort and simplicity of operation.
Heating
is supplied by a highly efficient seven zone hydro-air system
monitored by a network of centrally controlled, digital programmable
thermostats and remote temperature sensors. Three areas of the
house where an extra degree of comfort is desirable, the mud room,
the breakfast room, and the master bath, are equipped with radiant
heated floors.
Air Conditioning
is supplied to all seven zones by Trane’s newest generation
of high efficiency Freon-free condensers, providing superior climate
control, efficiency, and environmental protection.
Additional
comfort is provided by humidifiers, air filters, and an energy-recovery
fresh-air ventilation system that replaces all the air in the
house three times each hour. All ductwork is fully insulated.
This is
a “Smart House” in every sense of the word. It is
equipped with a powerful yet elegantly simple-to-use home automation
system. The microprocessors in the Lutron HomeWorks
Interactive system enable the homeowner to control the lighting,
climate control, security, and home-entertainment systems from
discrete control pads located throughout the house. Each control
pad includes up to nine programmable and clearly labeled buttons
to eliminate guesswork.
Even more
powerful features are provided by a centrally-located color video
touch-screen panel by Creston
Electronics, the world’s leading manufacturer of advanced
control and automation systems.
More than
four miles of wire were run through the house to provide communications,
systems control, and high-speed computer networking capabilities
to each room. In addition, the wiring is structured to enable
the seamless integration of new technologies as they become available.
